Does it bother anyone else that this meme started with someone nearly getting raped, and that that Auto-Tune-The-News song just kind of glosses over that? They could at least donate their portions of the profits.
I was in the back of a car in Seattle a few weeks ago with some white kids that were laughing their asses off to the autotuned version and, I dunno, it was creepy. Privileged white kids laughing at a poor black family that nearly got very really assaulted. How far removed is this post-ironic distance? Far enough to where there’s a Billboard-charting song off of someone nearly getting raped? It’s just fucking bizarre, and sad.
YES. I love so much that she got angry (“I was attacked by some idiot”) instead of being the shrinking violet so many expect her to be, and I love that her brother got protective and involved instead of blowing it off, and I don’t see why this is all so hilarious. Yeah, he’s a little flamboyant. Still. Doing it right.
Yeah, the obsession with how “funny” this song is drives me crazy. And I totally find tons of autotune stuff funny! But this? A bunch of white kids making their fame off of a horrible thing happening to a poor black family that evidently stands by each other (at least, the siblings do). I am not okay with the song.
ah research…so useful before getting angry on behalf of other people.
